Generative AI vs editing AI for fashion: pick the right one for the job

“AI for fashion” hides two completely different tools. Generative AI invents pixels from a prompt. Editing AI changes pixels in an image you already have. They have different strengths, different cost structures, and different failure modes. Picking the right one for the job is half the battle.

What each actually does

Generative AI starts from noise and a prompt and produces an image. Midjourney, raw Gemini, raw Stable Diffusion. The output is whatever the model happens to imagine, constrained by the prompt and any reference images you feed it. Variance is high; control is hard.

Editing AI starts from an existing image and a request — change this background, remove this object, swap this garment, upscale this resolution. The variance is much lower because most of the image is fixed and the model only acts on a region. Background removal, ghost mannequin, and virtual try-on all live in the editing-AI category.

When to use generative AI

When the deliverable does not exist yet. Concept exploration, moodboards, hero campaign visuals where the brand is inventing a scene from scratch, original lifestyle imagery for a new product line. Generative AI is the right tool when there is no source image to start from.

When to use editing AI
